Stephen Jackson Interested in the Mavs?

The captain of the Golden State Warriors, guard Stephen Jackson, has asked to be traded to a contending team or any team in the Texas Triangle. The Warriors have apparently not convinced him that they can become a playoff contender in the near future given their relative youth.

The Warriors have assembled a team with the most number of above average players of any team in the NBA. Unfortunately for them, not a single one of those players made the All-Star team last season. Don’t expect that to change this year. Eventually, one of either Monta Ellis or Stephen Curry could develop into a super star, but only time will tell.

Stephen Jackson has spent some time with the San Antonio Spurs, making him familiar with the Popovich system and their method of winning. I doubt that Jackson would be a good fit in either Dallas or Houston for obvious reasons. I don’t think that Jackson’s loud mouth and Cuban’s loud mouth would create good chemistry in the organization. Thesjax Rockets would be a bad fit because, well, they aren’t very good. Who knows if Yao will ever be the same again, and T-Mac and Shane Battier are afterthoughts these days. You can’t build a team around a 5-11 point guard. Expect Houston to be in the tank for a while.

“At this point, I’m 31 years old. I have four or five years left,” Jackson told Dime Magazine on Friday. “I want to be in a situation where I can continually be in the playoffs and get another ring. So that’s where my mind is at now.”

Jackson, speaking to the magazine in New York during a promotional event for a shoe line, said the status of his demand is pending.

“It’s not about a decision I made,” he told Dime Magazine. “It’s just things are in the air right now. I really can’t get too much into it right now.”

Jackson has averaged 15.4 points over nine seasons with the New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers and the Warriors.

He scored a career-high 20.7 points per game last season after signing a three-year,

$28 million extension with the Warriors in November.

“I’m just looking to go somewhere where I can go and win a championship,” Jackson said.
