Falling Out of Favor

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest suffered a concussion and injured his left elbow after falling at his home.

Artest didn’t travel with the Lakers to Saturday’s game at Sacramento after tripping over a box and falling down a flight of stairs at his home on Christmas night, the team said in a news release.

This incident comes off the tail end of an embarassing loss at home to the Cleveland Cavaliers in which the Cavs really dominated and set the tone.  For a team as deep and talented as the Lakers, a lopsided victory is extremely uncharacteristic of them and a rarity.  Fans were so disgusted by the Lakers’ showing (or rather no-show) on Christmas that they began to hurl their foam fingers onto the floor and even a water bottle was launched from the stands.

What is it about Ron Artest that illicits the lofting of projectiles from the stands (sorry I just couldn’t bring myself to pass up the oportunity) ?

Last night the Lakers escaped Sacramento with a double-overtime defeat of the Kings.  It wasn’t pretty or dominant but the Lakers pulled it off.  While there’s something to be said about winning the close ones, it should be noted that the Lakers got blasted by the Cavaliers and then squeaked out a W over a far-inferior Kings team.   Granted they were on a back-end, were without Artest, and were on the road, they are and should be held to a higher standard considering they are the proverbial ‘team to beat’.
